The Double Life of Alfred Bloggs
These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than clerks who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently referred to as 'white-collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white-collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.
When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just found another white-collar job in a shop. He will soon be working in an office. He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a collar and tie all day long.

(Such is...)
Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white-collar workers.
Human nature is such that...。 such... that...
He will be earning only half as much as he used to, but he feels that his rise in status is well worth the loss of money.(收入减半 vs 地位提升,生动刻画了主人公的“死要面子”。)
He spends hours polishing his shoes, yet he rarely has enough money to buy a bus ticket.(他花几个小时擦鞋,却连买公交车票的钱都没有。)
People who work in offices are frequently referred to as 'white-collar workers' for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie...(这里用
for the simple reason that引导同位语从句,解释了为什么叫白领,语气轻松自然。) He is a couch potato, a person who spends most of their time sitting and watching television.(他是个沙发土豆,也就是那种把大部分时间花在坐着看电视上的人。)
Every morning he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls... Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit.(通过“穿西装出门 -> 换工作服 -> 洗澡 -> 换回西装”这一套行云流水的动作,完美展现了他为了掩饰身份所做的“挣扎”。)
When he saw his ex-girlfriend, he suddenly found his shoelaces extremely interesting and spent five minutes tying them.(当他看到前女友时,他突然觉得自己的鞋带极其有趣,花了五分钟系鞋带。)
