Smash-and-Grab

The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewelry shop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Beautiful individual necklaces were displayed against a background of black velvet. Suddenly, a large car with four young men in it stopped outside the shop. All four men got out and one of them smashed the window of the shop with an iron bar. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed. Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.

While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs.

  • 课文示范...one of them smashed the window... Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays...(smash, rush, run, throw 四个动词一气呵成,毫无废话。)
The dog barked, lunged at the fence, and snapped its jaws.(狗狂吠,猛扑向栅栏,猛咬一口。)

Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases...(“扔烟灰缸”是伴随“追车”发生的动作。)
She sat by the window, staring at the rain.(她坐在窗边,凝视着雨。)

The raid was all over in three minutes... They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.(3分钟,数千英镑,极具画面感和新闻价值。)
    • 不说 It happened very quickly. It happened in less than two minutes.
He earned a lot of money. He earned over a million dollars a year.
