A Famous Monastery
The Great St. Bernard Pass connects Switzerland to Italy. At 2,470 metres, it is the highest mountain pass in Europe. The famous monastery of St. Bernard, which was founded in the eleventh century, lies about a mile away. For hundreds of years, St. Bernard dogs have saved the lives of travellers crossing the dangerous Pass. These friendly dogs, once famous all over the world, have helped over 2,000 people. The monastery also has a hospice, which provides shelter for travellers in distress.
The Pass is dangerous because of the sudden changes in weather. In summer, the sun can be blazing hot, but in winter, the temperature can drop to thirty degrees below zero. Snowstorms are common, and the wind can be so strong that it knocks people over. In the old days, before the road was built, the only way to cross was on foot or by mule. Many travellers lost their way in the snow and froze to death.
Today, the road is well-maintained, and the monastery is no longer the only refuge. But the St. Bernard dogs still patrol the area, and the monks still offer hot soup and a warm bed to anyone in need. The spirit of the place remains unchanged: a beacon of hope in a land of ice and snow.

The famous monastery of St. Bernard, which was founded in the eleventh century, lies about a mile away.
which was founded...
The Great St. Bernard Pass...(大背景)→ ... The monastery... Lies about a mile away.(具体地点)→ ...
The campus is nestled in the valley. At its heart stands the library, surrounded by lush gardens. Inside, the main hall is filled with the scent of old paper.(山谷 → 校园中心 → 图书馆 → 内部大厅,视线层层推进。)
In summer, the sun can be blazing hot, but in winter, the temperature can drop to thirty degrees below zero.
The desert is a land of extremes. By day, the sun scorches the earth, but by night, the cold bites through your clothes.
A beacon of hope in a land of ice and snow.(用“beacon”象征希望,把物理的修道院升华为精神的灯塔。)
It is not just a shop; it is a harbor for wandering minds.
The tree is not just wood; it is a witness to a century of change.
